People and animals stay out of water with these conditions because contact with HABs, scums and bloom material can cause health effects including diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting; skin, eye, or throat irritation; and allergic reactions or breathing difficulties. Symptoms may be much more severe in animals who may consume more bloom material because they lick their fur.  More information about animal symptoms is found at

Don’t swim, fish, boat, or wade in areas with blooms.
Don’t eat fish caught from areas with blooms.
Keep pets and children away from blooms and scums.
Rinse with clean water if you, your family or pets have contact with blooms.

Consider contacting your healthcare provider for more information about symptoms that may be associated with exposure.  We also recommend that you reach out to your veterinarian as soon as possible if an animal is symptomatic.
